Passage: Hebrews 3:7-11
Warning: Trust the Son of God
This passage is a warning to the current people of God. Their faith in God will be tested and faith that endures to the end will have proven to be saving faith. For, “We are the house of God, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.” (Hebrews 3:6)
This confidence and endurance of faith has not always been easy for the people of God. Though God has never failed to bring about the things he has promised, his people are not always good at trusting him. One reading of the Old Testament, will reveal the people of God who waver in their faith that God will fulfill his promises again and again.
The writer of Hebrews reminds the readers that their fore-fathers in faith faltered during their exodus through the wilderness. The people’s hearts became hard as they awaited the blessing and the rest of God. Though they experienced the works of God for 40 years, they still did not trust him and instead tested him, provoking him to anger because, “They always go astray in their hearts; they have not known my ways.” In anger God decided to not let them enter the promised rest.
The warning then is; do not be like the fore-fathers of Israel, who rebelled against God. Do not harden your heart before God, instead trust him and live your life to glorify him. He is worthy. “Today if you hear his voice, do not harden you heart as in the rebellion.” (Hebrews 3:7-8)
