Passage: Hebrews 7:11-22
Priest of a Better Promise
The priest from the line of Levi, were the priest of the Law. They reminded the people of God's laws and then sacrificed for the forgiveness of sins against God's law. Perfection of the priest and the people was not attainable through this law. God's law was not meant to make anyone perfect, in fact it was given to God's people to expose their imperfection and cause them to repent.
Jesus did not come from the line of Levi, and so he would not be a priest of the law. God gave him a new promise; a better promise. Through Jesus, a better hope is introduced. Through his sacrifice, he gives hope of perfection that was never offered by the law and a hope of new life that is lived in nearness to God himself.
By making Jesus the successor to Melchizedek, God makes Jesus the priest of a new promise. Making petition by the blood of his own perfect sacrifice and continuing to act as the mediator between God and his people.
